Mid-Year Freak Out! A Wrap Up of the First Half of the Year

Hello!

In this post, I'm going to participate in the aforementioned Mid-Year Freak Out Tag. A lot of Booktubers posted theirs in the month of June, but I like to do things a little late around here 😊
I will link to the original poster of the tag from several years ago at the bottom of this post. I will also, obviously, be writing out the questions as I answer them. Each response will also have the Goodreads link attached. Get your snacks and drinks, and settle in. It's going to be a long one...

Let's get to it!

1) Best book you've read so far in 2019?

I actually have two responses for this question. First, I read Verity earlier this year and loved it.      Then, in May, I read A Discovery Of Witches. It's been on my TBR for years and years, but I finally got around to it after they transitioned it into a TV series. I knew I'd want to read it before I watched it, and I'm so glad I did!

2) Best sequel you've read so far in 2019?

If we are talking about sequels to books that I've read in the past, then it would hands down have to be Finale. It was a wonderful conclusion that I wish never had to happen... I could gladly live in the world of Caraval for forever. If we are talking about new-to-me series that I've devoured this year alone? I'm loving the Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson. The second book in the series, The Vanishing Stair is fantastic. I love that for every step closer you get to solving a part of the mystery, there's another plot twist thrown in. And the CLIFF HANGERS... Holy cow, I can't believe I have to wait for the third book... Last but not least, I'm also enjoying the Selection Series by Kiera Cass. I won't link these, but they've been great reads as well. They're another series on my TBR from years ago that I finally picked up, and I'm enjoying reading about America Singer and her journey in a competition to be the one chosen to marry by Prince Maxon.

3) New release you haven't read yet, but want to?

These two books are new releases from this year that I own but have yet to read, simply because they are part of series and I haven't read the first in either one yet (I have a SERIOUS backlog issue). The Wicked King and Two Can Keep A Secret. A BRAND new book that just came out I'd LOVE to own but haven't picked up yet would be The Odd Sisters: A Tale of the Three Witches.

4) Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

Capturing the Devil. Hands down. I've had it preordered since the second it became available. I love the SJTR series.

5) Biggest disappointment?

This one is hard to say, but I'd have to go with The Disasters. While it was a great novel for a debut author, I just felt like it didn't live up to the hype for some reason. It fell flat in that it was almost like she tried a little TOO hard to be all-inclusive, and it detracted from the actual plot line. Love interests should not play a key role when you have two or three days to save the world.

6) Biggest surprise?

The Woman In The Window was a surprise for me because I had attempted to start it a couple of times in the past and just couldn't get into it. This time, I stuck with it past the 50 pages (where I had previously hit the brick wall and decided to DNF it). I'm glad I did. Some of the twists and turns caught me completely off guard.

7) Favorite new author? (Debut or new to you)

Riley Sagar and Alice Feeney. Even though Maureen Johnson isn't entirely a new-to-me author (I LOVE Let It Snow), the linked book was the first book solely written by her that I've read.

8) Newest fictional crush?

Matthew Clairmont has me intrigued. Also still low key in love with Thomas Cresswell 😍 Making note of that as I reread the SJTR series in preparation for Capturing the Devil.

9) Newest favorite character?

Felicity Montague was a delightful character we first encountered in her brother's story.
In hers, we see how Felicity has grown into an even more headstrong & opinionated young women determined to make a name for herself as a doctor.

10) Book that made you cry?

Five Feet Apart. A love story between two teens with cystic fibrosis who can't touch for fear of killing each other? Ugh.

11) Book that made you happy?

Look Alive Twenty-Five. The Stephanie Plum series is always good for a laugh-out-loud experience.

12) Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or recently)?

FinaleCapturing The Devil, and A Curse So Dark And Lonely.

13) Favorite book to film adaptation you've seen so far this year?

A Discovery of Witches. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm really enjoying it.

14) What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I have a stack of cozy mysteries I intend to try to make it through by the end of July for a contest on Litsy. If for some reason they don't interest me, I will be taking them to the bookstore for credit. I also have books that have been on my shelves for years that I'd like to give a chance. If I don't get to them by the end of the year, I'll also probably give them away as well. If they haven't inspired me to pick them up thus far, I have too many other books that need shelf space. Of course, I'd like to finish the Selection Series. Also rereading the Hunger Games series, SJTR series, and I also want to reread Legendary since I read Caraval again before diving into Finale. The All Souls Trilogy must be finished because I am loving it so far. Ideally, I'd like to start Outlander over by the end of the year as well.

Phew!! And there we have it, folks. My mid-year wrap up! It was a lot of fun to go back through my Goodreads and pick which books to use. The original post was from this blog: I Am Dearmaw. Again, I first saw it through Booktube but since I don't have a channel (though I've debated it), I thought it would be fun to do here. I invite all of you to do the same!

Batman: Nightwalker

Bruce Wayne is a senior in HS when we first meet him in this story. His best friends are Diana and Harvey Dent. Since his parents died, it has been up to Bruce to continue their annual gala where they contribute to different charities. This year's gala is different though... it's held on Bruce's birthday, on which he decides to go for a ride in one of Wayne Tech's exotic new cars. Unfortunately he rides straight into a path that ends up leading him to a sentence of working the summer at Arkham. While there, he encounters the mysterious Madeline. She's more trouble than Bruce realized. 4/5🌟 Rating I'm really enjoying this series so far. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of Catwoman!
5🌟 ♪Who-o-oa, Vampirina... Coolest ghoul in the human wo-or-orld ♪ We LOVED this Little Golden Book adaptation of one of the episodes from the Disney Jr series. It's got two of LO's favorite things... Vampirina herself AND a baby. Vampirina is recruited to help babysit when her aunt comes to town with baby Nosferatu. Her dad is too busy watching the fangball championship featuring his favorite team, The Trolls. Vampirina should have it handled... after all, how much trouble could a baby vampire be???

The Woman In The Window

You guys, I'm ashamed to say it took me so long to read this book. I had started it a couple of times but never really got past the first 40 pages or so. Since I was already in a slump, I decided to give it another go and took the plunge. Check out this blurb from Goodreads, and then my review. πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ· Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare. What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems. πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ·πŸ‘€πŸ“ΈπŸ· Y'al...
