"Most folks associate the city of Salem, Massachusetts with witches, but for Lee Barrett, it's home. This October she's returned to her hometown--where her beloved Aunt Ibby still lives--to interview for a job as a reporter at WICH-TV. But the only opening is for a call-in psychic to host the late night horror movies. It seems the previous host, Ariel Constellation, never saw her own murder coming.
Lee reluctantly takes the job, but when she starts seeing real events in the obsidian ball she's using as a prop, she wonders if she might really have psychic abilities. To make things even spookier, it's starting to look like Ariel may have been an actual practicing witch--especially when O'Ryan, the cat Lee and Aunt Ibby inherited from her, exhibits some strange powers of his own. With Halloween fast approaching, Lee must focus on unmasking a killer--or her career as a psychic may be very short lived..."
I received this one as the final rotation in our Coffee Bean Book Club over on Litsy. I was so excited to get my hands on it. A TV psychic who ends up dead? An actual scryer? Salem? Yes please!
I was hooked on this action packed cozy from page one. Lee is a smart, talented woman whom I was easily able to connect with. I liked that even though she wanted to help solve crimes, she did not jump blindly into each situation like most heroines do. The relationships she holds with other characters are endearing and while she does have a love interest, it doesn't overshadow the overall plot of the book. Though I was able to pretty quickly figure out "whodunnit," and under what circumstances, I really enjoyed this book. However it must be noted that I wish there had been trigger warnings. There are... unsettling issues... that arise during this book that I wasn't expecting. And while I understand why, and how it contributed to the build up of a particular character, it just threw me for a loop. Because of that, I didn't rate as highly as I could have. I give this one 3.5/4✯
